Hello:
Many of my work colleges have asked me to give an overview on IP SLA.
They want to know:
- what the various types of SLA can be deployed,
- how they can be tuned and
- what options are available.
I have attached my short IOS based config example showing the most
popular IP SLA tests that i use. Before deploying do note that IP SLA
comes in two flavours:
(1) REQUIRES active participation from the far end. As a minimum, the
far end must enable the "IP SLA responder on the DST device
(2) Does NOT require any changes or configurations at the far end
The later two are important to know especially if you do do manage the
far end or the far end belongs to some other organization. The flavor
is listed in the attached TXT file as well as below brackets(1 or 2)
ICMP Echo (2)
UDP echo (1)
ICMP path Echo (2)
ICMP jitter (2)
UDP jitter (1)
ICMP path jitter (1)
Voip UDP jitter (1)
Voip registration delay (1)
Voip RTP (1)
VoIP call setup monitoring(1)
Http response (2)
FTP response (2)
DNS response (2)
TCP connect response (1)
You will need some or all of the following details to configure one or more of the IP
SLA tests. Some tests need more parameters than others
<DST RTR LoopBack Addr>
<SRC RTR LoopBack Addr>
<DST site phone number>
<DST site DNS server>
<DST site FTP server>
<DST site WEB server>
You may notice that the frequency is different for each test. All mine
run at just under 5 or 10 minutes. This is set so the router does not
have a sudden CPU load increase of all test occurring at the same time
every 5 minutes. Since each runs at a different repetition rate, the
router is evenly loaded.
There are more tests you can run. refer to the attached Cisco PDF file
for the complete set of all the IOS 15 based options
Once you add these to your router, get VNQM to discover them. I find that
this method gives you more control and fidelity
feel free to add your tips and suggestions
Cheers
